Course Structure
This 5-week course is designed to progressively build your skills, week by week:
Week 1: Foundation
- Introduction to materials and basic colour mixing.
- Understanding composition and focal points in landscapes.
- Quick studies and experimental mark-making.
Week 2: Light and dark
- Exploring how light affects form and mood in landscapes.
- Techniques for creating depth and perspective.
- Working with tonal values.
Week 3: Colour & Emotion
- Advanced colour theory for landscapes – warm and cool palettes.
- Using colour to evoke emotion and personal expression.
- Layering techniques for rich, vibrant surfaces.
Week 4: Texture & Detail in Nature
- Developing expressive brushwork to represent natural textures (trees,water, rocks).
- Adding selective detail without overworking.
- Bringing personal interpretation to your landscape.
Week 5: Bringing it All Together
- Review of techniques learned.
- Working on a more sustained landscape painting, applying all principles.
- Individual feedback and guidance for your final piece.
Course Details
Tutor: Libby Mason-Smith (Local Artist in New Forest – UK)
Focus: Learn fundamental painting techniques and build skills to produce expressive landscape paintings.
Duration: 5-week course (Every Tuesday, starting 24th February 2026)
Morning session: 11:00 to 13:00 (2 hours per session)
